Faith
Building community
Fri., Nov. 11 | 01:00 PM - Oftentimes when we talk with co-workers and acquaintances, the subject of religion comes up. A natural question we might ask each other when we find out someone is Christian or Buddhist or Muslim is, “Where do you go to worship?” This question about where we go helps to locate each other on the map and establish us as belonging to a particular group with particular meeting times. If the conversation stops there, however, we may miss the chance to discuss a more profound subject: “What does our religion cause us to do?”
Yitzchak Rabin Memorial Day

Your vision for your children
Thu., Oct. 6 | 01:54 PM - Our children are back in school, and as they dive into classes and their other activities, it’s an ideal time for parents to reflect on our hopes and dreams for them. In our mind’s eye we can see them as the adults we hope they will be one day. This mental picture guides us as we raise them toward that end. The better we can articulate our vision for our children, the more deliberate we become in our decisions for them, what we teach them and the influences we allow in their lives.

Spiritual growth
Fri., Sep. 30 | 09:44 AM - I am happy to say that the trees in my front yard look pretty good this year. There are two reasons you should be impressed by my trees. First of all, I’m not exactly known for my green thumb. Through the years, I’ve found that I’m fairly good at growing weeds but not much else. (By way of illustration, I should tell you about the time several years ago when I was “trimming” some bushes and a total stranger stopped to observe. He had nothing at stake in what I was doing except for his concern for other living things. Finally, unable to stand it any longer he offered this helpful comment: “It would be a whole lot easier if you would just use some poison.” Turns out, the next year I realized he was right.)
Hope on a rope
Fri., Sep. 23 | 09:33 AM - According to Forbes Magazine, Americans spend more than $11 billion per year on "hope" in the form of self-improvement books, weight loss guides, life coaching videos and stress management seminars. Even in a recession-riddled economy, there has been no shortage of sales in the self-help industry. Whether they finish the book, watch the DVD or unwrap the journal, people continue to buy at a record-breaking pace because it makes them feel like they are improving themselves somehow. The reality is that collecting inspirational products does not increase your chances of success any more than keeping a pair of eyeglasses in your pocket improves your vision. Inspiration is simply potential energy lying dormant until it is applied correctly. Once applied, it produces transformation.

Rosh Hashanah
Fri., Sep. 23 | 09:31 AM - Rather than being marked by fireworks, champagne and late night parties, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins the evening of Sept. 28, is a time of introspection and self examination. Rosh Hashanah is a bookend to a time known as the “Ten Days of Repentance” in the Jewish calendar which culminates at the other bookend with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. However, what do Jews mean by “repentance” during this time? The Hebrew word for repentance is Teshuvah, which literally means “turning” or “returning.” To what may this turning/returning be likened?

Allowing God to carry you
Thu., Sep. 15 | 09:37 AM - After giving birth to three children I have noticed that there is one thing that remains consistent. While it is true that all children are different, they all have one thing in common. They want to be carried. It doesn’t matter if they are hungry, tired or hurting. They all want to be carried in the arms of the person they know can love and protect them and can soothe them until the problem goes away.
