Loudountimes.com has had a lively comment section since its inception. And while sometimes the discussion steered off course, it helped add to the overall picture of the stories involved by allowing for readers to participate.
In recent months, however, the number of mean-spirited comments has continued to grow. While the newsroom has done its best to remove profane or libelous comments as they were posted, the comment section on some web postings spun out of control. It has become increasingly clear that profane and potentially libelous comments do not fit with the mission of a community-based family newspaper.
After consultation with several members of the community, the newspaper has made the decision to change the way our commenting system works. The following changes were made today.
*To begin, all commenters will be required to register and login before commenting. Links to the login and registration pages are at the top of each page on the website, directly above the LoudounTimes.com flag. Some existing users may need to re-register.
*Comments will now go through a moderation process before publication online. While Times-Mirror staff will be regularly reviewing comments throughout the day, please note that you will not see your comments appear immediately.
It’s our hope that these changes will return a level of civility to the website and allow it to more accurately represent the strong community values in Loudoun County. We certainly hope that our regular readers will continue to participate in a free-form discussion using our comment section during the trial.
Please feel free to share any thoughts on this new policy either using the comment system or by emailing Times-Mirror management at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
